Abstract

The purpose of this study is to estimate the preventive effect of water fluoridation on dental caries.
Dental survey had been done for 537 6-year-old children in fluoridated area and 532 6-year-old children in non-fluoridated area in 1991. After 2 years 2 years of follow-up period, the survey was done again for 397 children of fluoridated area and
387
children of non-fluoridated area. DMFS increment of all surfaces, pits fissures and smooth surfaces during 2 years was calculated and compared between fluoridated and non-fluoridated area.
@ES The obtained results were as follows:
@EN 1. Mean DMFS of all surfaces was reduced 31.3% by water fluoridation.
2. Reduction rates of mean DMFS by water fluoridation were 50.3% for smooth surfaces.
3. Reduction rates of mean DMFS by water fluoridation were 28.3% for pits and fissures.
